History

When we were formed
The Italian Banking Association was founded in Milan on 13 April 1919 but during the two world wars, the doors of the Association were closed. The new inception was in 1945, when the Italian Banking Association was reborn from the ashes of the war.

Why we were set up: a bit of history
Over the years, ABI’s role as representative of the banking system was strengthened and extended to the entire financial community. Meanwhile, the banking system itself underwent a radical transformation.
In the 1990’s, the legal framework of the sector was changed by several important legislative acts: a privatization law (the Amato-Carli Law) , the second banking coordination directive, the consolidated financial act and the consolidating banking act.
This led to the current structure of the system composed of private and listed banks.
